this song derived from a poetry prompt on the last katie ellen tour. we were on a long drive in Europe and as a game, i had people throw me ideas for poems and whatever they gave me, i wrote about. i think it was Nick who said "someone who has to turn the water blue with food coloring every time they eat at a restaurant." a few months later i was listening to npr and heard a story about hong kong dying their water blue to blast at protestors so they could more readily identify them. it took on a new meaning then and my heart broke with international solidarity for people seeking liberation.
lyrics
you have to turn the water blue
if you're meant to drink it
in the way that you obscure the truth
if you just can't bear to see it
like how the sky becomes azure
the ocean made a sapphire
the illusion soon becomes the cure
for our heartache and our quagmire
in time we turn it to excuse
for looking at the surface
what's beyond or underneath
we're too afraid will hurt us
you have to turn the water blue
if you're meant to drink it
in the way that you obscure the truth
if you just can't bear to see it

This record epitomizes the beauty, love, and sincerity that define Laura Stevenson as an artist. She keeps it honest, doesn't flinch at sadness and rage—but she also considers joy. She doesn't despair. Neither should we. Not while we can listen to music like this. djuss
