about

TFW you go home for the holidays and meet up with an old lover at your hometown diner.

lyrics

Distant neon diner
Tender fallen snow
See you staring softly
From your seat near the window

“Thanks, I’m meeting someone”
Make my way to you
Suddenly I’m nervous
As I settle in the booth

You look so much older
The lines are creeping in
Your eyes are the same sapphire
That they’ve always been

We’re silent for a moment
Staring down the truth
You say, “It’s good to see you”
I exhale and say, “You too”

The waitress fills your coffee
Gestures to my cup
“Would you like some darlin?
I don’t mean to interrupt”

“Yes, I’d love some thank you.
I’ll just take it black.”
“Some things never change,” you say
We both let out a laugh

You ask about my sister
I ask about the kids
You share a couple photos
I say, “How’d they get so big?”

You say, “Congratulations,
I really loved your book.”
I lift my gaze to thank you
And you’re giving me that look

Suddenly I feel it
Tears against my cheek
Struggling for words
Trying to bring myself to speak

I tell you that I’m sorry
It doesn’t matter now
But I love you and I wish
That I could take it back somehow

“Now you’ve got me crying,”
You tell me through your smile,
“Grateful to be with you even
For a little while”

You take my hands in yours
Tears streaming down our necks
We let each other go
As the waitress drops the check

“I’ve got it, please don’t argue”
I put the money down
Guess I should be making my way
Back into town

We slowly leave the diner
Walking side by side
Both in love and anguish
Both taking it in stride

You stop me at the corner
Kiss me softly on the cheek
I savor for the last time
The way you look at me
