I wrote this as a sort of universal meditation for all grieving, hurting, or lonely people. It was intended for people I love and miss. But it's taken a different meaning in the past few weeks.
A bunch of my friends and family helped me make a beautiful music video that captures the universal alone-togetherness of stay-at-home. They're all dancing around to the song. It was SO NICE to see them. I couldn't edit it without crying.
It's a nod to my dad as well, who passed away last year in October. Most of our relationship was long distance because of divorce, addiction, incarceration, or physical proximity. I thought of him a lot while writing this. I didn't think I had a video of my dad at all to include but once I was deep into the editing process, I started going through the photos on my computer to make room for all the video clips. I found this amazing video of my dad from the best day we ever had together where we ate ice cream and went shoe shopping (my dad had an affinity for women's shoes). I was so glad I found it and he could be a part of it.
Thinking a lot about the many black children who have lost their fathers to racist violence and the many incarcerated fathers who might never know their children. Thinking about the feeling of speaking to your father through prison glass. A social distance too many black men and men of color know but should never have to.
